School District 308 Bans "unsafe" so-called Hoverboards from all District Buildings and Campuses

Oswego, Ill. (February 26, 2016) — Due to safety concerns associated with hoverboards that have been raised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the potential impact to the safety of our community, Community Unit School District 308 schools have instituted a district-wide ban on these devices.

Effective Monday, February 29, 2016, and until further notice, hoverboards, also known as self-balancing scooters and hands-free segways, will not be permitted on campus or in any School District 308-owned building.

There have been documented reports of these devices spontaneously igniting during use or while charging and, on December 16, 2015, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that it is investigating 28 fires in 19 states caused by hoverboards.

“With the documented dangers and safety concerns and the reports of the damage and injuries these devices present, this decision was made with the well-being of our students in mind,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Matthew Wendt. “As always, the safety of students and staff is our top priority.”
