Texas Felon With Gun Arrested At Former Hide-A-Way Lakes Property

When deputies arrived at the campground to do a well-being check on a teenage girl, the man answered the door with a gun, police said.

OSWEGO, IL — A 36-year-old Texas man with a past felony conviction was arrested early Thursday morning after he was found with a gun in his possession at Fox Bluff Vacation Cottage and RV Resort, formerly known as Hide-A-Way Lakes, officials said.

Deputies from the Kendall County Sheriff's Office responded to the campgrounds, at 8045 Van Emmon Road, to conduct a well-being check on a teenage girl. When police arrived, the man, identified as Marco Tapia, answered the door with a gun, officials said.

Tapia was "agitated and uncooperative" during the interaction before he eventually gave in to police orders, put the gun away and allowed deputies to complete the wellness check.

Once deputies left the residence, officials said they determined the Texas man was "prohibited from possessing a firearm," so they obtained a search warrant for Tapia's trailer from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office and seized his gun.

Following an investigation, deputies charged Tapia with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Officials said no other criminal activity was found, and all people involved were unharmed.

In a statement relayed through the sheriff's office, Fox Bluff Resort owner Lane Beatch commended deputies and said the guests have since left the campgrounds.

"What was potentially a combative situation with a new guest was masterfully diffused by members of the Kendall County Sheriff’s office," he said. "The [Kendall County] Sheriff’s Office did a wellness check on this new guest, which evolved into a situation that was defused within a few minutes. Out of an abundance of caution, the [Kendall County] Sheriff’s Office deputies and a tactical team were on scene as there was mention of a firearm. The new guests have now departed the campground and were cordial throughout the ordeal."

In April, Village Board trustees voted to annex the 151-acre property into the Village of Oswego. The property, previously denoted as unincorporated Kendall County, continues to be significantly rehabilitated into a "premier destination," Patch reported.
