OSWEGO, IL — Just love that big band sound? Then you’re in for a treat this Sunday in Oswego when The Vern Spevak Big Band takes the stage at the Spevak Percussive Arts Center in Oswego.

Led by Chicagoland drummer Vern Spevak, the all new Vern Spevak Big Band exemplifies today's sound in contemporary big band jazz, according to the group’s Facebook page.

According to Christina Channell, the group’s publicist, Spevak is an Oswego native and members of the band come from all over the Chicagoland Area.

“Big band jazz is usually reserved for outings to cultural arts hot spots in Chicago. Oswego and surrounding communities no longer have to look far beyond their own backyard for an outstanding night of big band jazz,” Channell said in an email. “Concert-goers can expect to be blown away by the sound and the energy of this ensemble. Every single one of the band members is a sought-after performer in the Chicago area; several have performed internationally with some of the greatest musical icons in the world. To hear them play together is an incredible experience.”

And if you don’t like big band music Channell suggests you give it another try.

The Vern Spevak Big Band formed in 2014 when Vern Spevak and longtime friend and musical colleague Dave Katz came together with a dream to foster an appreciation for fine jazz in the community, Channell said. Today the 18-member band celebrates jazz for their own enjoyment and with a passion for their art.

The band plays top jazz standards in Contemporary Big Band Jazz, Channell said. The arrangements are challenging, exciting and showcase the extraordinary talent of these top musicians.

“Band leader Vern Spevak is a drumming legend - you're likely to hear a drum solo that you won't soon forget,” she said.

The band will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday at 49 Stonehill Road. Admission is free and doors open at 5:30 p.m.
