2 Loaded Handguns Recovered After Gunfire Report: Palatine Police

PALATINE, IL — A 17-year-old Palatine boy is facing multiple felony charges after police said officers recovered two loaded 9mm handguns, ammunition and suspected controlled-substance pills during an investigation into gunfire on Independence Drive.

Palatine police responded shortly before 9 p.m. Sept. 2, to the 600 block of East Independence Drive after a 911 caller reported a man with a gun and gunfire.

Officers found multiple spent shell casings in the area, police said. Investigators also located damage to a glass door in the 700 block of East Independence Drive that was believed to have been caused by a fired round.

Police said investigators identified and spoke with a 17-year-old Palatine juvenile before obtaining a search warrant for a residence associated with him.

During the search, officers recovered two loaded 9mm handguns, ammunition and multiple pills suspected of being controlled substances, according to police.

The juvenile was taken into custody. Police said he also damaged village property while being held at the Palatine Police Department.

Following a review of the investigation, the juvenile was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony; multiple counts of unlawful use of weapons, Class 4 felonies; possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony; and criminal damage to state-supported property, a Class 4 felony.

Police said the charges also include felony offenses stemming from a separate June 1 Palatine investigation involving the unlawful possession of a firearm.

The juvenile was transported to a juvenile detention facility and remains in custody, police said.

Because the accused is a juvenile, police are not releasing identifying information.

The charges are accusations, and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
