But the most important hacks to focus on are how to make what you’re eating healthier for your whole body. Here are 4 unique substitutions that you can use to make your mouth happier and heart healthier.

Cauliflower

Who knew that little white vegetable tree could help so many of our favorite foods transform into way healthier options. Cauliflower can be substituted for pizza, rice, mashed potatoes, tots (cauli-tots of course) and way more! There is barely a difference in taste and you don’t feel as heavy after eating these options! There are a ton of recipes out there to prepare a large variety of cauli-recipes.

Spaghetti Squash

Pasta is a food we hate to love. An excess amount of carbs turns into fat and can increase your risk of certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Spaghetti squash is the perfect substitute for pasta. Although the textures are definitely different this does not affect it’s deliciousness.

Now, what’s in it for you? Less calories and less carbs! One cup of cooked spaghetti is about 220 calories with 42g of carbs while one cup of spaghetti squash is only 42 calories with around 10g of carbs.

Applesauce

When cooking or baking replace oil or butter with applesauce. Yes, applesauce. This helps to reduce both your calorie and fat intake. Even though sweets like brownies or cookies may not always be the healthiest options, this gives you the chance to feel better after indulging.

Ground Turkey

A healthier option for all of your meals containing ground beef would be to substitute in ground turkey. This lowers the saturated fat and calorie intake. Although it can affect the flavor, in those instances a little more seasoning should do the trick!
