UTICA, N.Y. – Harper College women’s track and field athlete Joslyn Nicholson (/Cary-Grove) made quite an impact in the first day of the 2015 NJCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Championships. Nicholson won the national championship in the hammer throw and finished second place in the triple jump.
Nicholson’s hammer throw of 40.57m (133’1”) was one meter better than nearest competitor Harley Buczkowski of host Mohawk Valley Community College. Nicholson’s teammates Shayan Dussard (/Hoffman Estates) and Leah Kloss (/Grayslake Central) also earned valuable points in the event. Dussard placed fourth with a toss of 38.13m (125’1”) while Kloss placed fifth with a heave of 37.47m (122’11”).
After a brief rest, Nicholson took second place in the triple jump with her best jump of 10.85m (35’7 ½”). She nearly became a national champ in the event but was edged by Suffolk Community College’s Tristan Bevans by just 1/100th of a meter with a jump of 10.86m.
The Hawks’ final point of the day came from the 4x800m relay team of Silvia Catalan (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), Itzel Sotelo (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), Taylor LoCoco (/Prairie Ridge) and Cynthia Siddiqui (/Palatine). The group came in eighth place with a time of 11:23.64.
Harper scored 28 total points on the first day of competition and currently stands in third place. Mohawk Valley leads the meet with 41 points, and Suffolk stands in second place with 34 points.
Friday is day two of competition, featuring finals in the 10k, long jump, pole vault, discus and high jump. There will also be trials in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 1600m relay, 100m hurdles, and 400m hurdles.
