Hip-Hop Poet Inspires Young Adults to Write at Workshop

Using the techniques of contemporary hip-hop poetry, workshop presenter Kevin Coval will draw on the themes of his new book, “L-vis Lives! Racemusic Poems,” to encourage participants to write and share stories about their own lives and communities—creating a space of knowledge and understanding where everyone’s voice is equally valued. Geared toward participants ages 12 and up, the workshop will be held Sunday, January 22, from noon to 1 p.m. at Countryside Church Unitarian Universalist, 1025 North Smith Street, between Northwest Highway and Dundee, Palatine, IL. The suggested fee is $10. Pay as you are able; all are welcome. Coval will also be guest pulpit at Countryside Church’s 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services. For more information or to register, please go to www.tinyurl.com/KCovalWorkshopRegistration or call 847-359-8440.

Coval is a Chicago-area native who teaches at the School of the Art Institute and at various public high schools and is a regular contributor to Chicago Public Radio. This dynamic poet, teacher and mentor is the co-founder and artistic director of Louder Than A Bomb: The Chicago Teen Poetry Festival that has given voice to urban youth through their own poetry.  At the workshop, Coval shares the liberating power of story to inspire and motivate young adults to write about their own life experiences.
