Firefighters were called to the home at 150 Oak Street at 8:15 p.m. where they found smoke coming from the roof and second floor of the two-story home, the Chicago Tribune reports. Her and her daughter, Lindsey, became trapped on the second floor by the “overpowering” fire, according to the Daily Herald.
Neighbor Linda Kuzmiak told the Daily Herald that Lois and Lindsey were “so attached”and Lois was an around-the-clock caregiver to her daughter, 34, who was born prematurely and had multiple sclerosis. Lindsey was listed in stable condition at Loyola Medical Center on Saturday.
Neighbors attempted to save the women but were unable to make it far within the home due to the heavy smoke, according to the newspaper.
“The smoke literally knocked us down,” Bryan Urban, who was sitting on a nearby back porch when he heard the smoke alarm go off, told the Daily Herald. “It was crazy intense. Our lungs were just burning.”
Two other neighbors who attempted to save the women were taken to an area hospital where they were listed in stable condition, according to the article.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
