League of Women Voters Hosts District 15 Referendum Forum at Palatine Public Library

Representatives from community-based 4RD15Kids referendum opposition group.

The League of Women Voters is sponsoring an upcoming forum at the Palatine Public Library regarding the controversial, District 15 $130 million building bond referendum.

Presenters will include 4RD15Kids member Barb Kain, who will present that group's position on the referendum question, which will be on the November 8, 2016 ballot during the General Election.

The group is strongly opposed to the referendum, citing a lack of community engagement, as well as lack of solid financial reports, transportation and demographic studies, as well as a clear vision and concrete plan to support the plan and its many goals.

"Our goal is to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to be made aware of, and educated about this $130 million referendum question; the implications of approving it will have what we believe to be negative repercussions that will affect our community for decades to come," Kain said. "We need a better plan, that is given time to be more organized, and one that our residents have plenty of opportunity to learn about and weigh in on."

Superintendent Scott Thompson also will present information about the referendum during this forum. According to District 15 attorneys, the school district is not permitted to take a stance on the referendum. Rather its job is to convey information about it.

Pro referendum group representatives were extended an invitation to present at this forum, but declined the offer to participate.

After Kain and Thompson present their information, time will be made for questions from the audience.

This forum is free and open to the public. It will be held on Tuesday, October 4 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. Court in Palatine.
