Lost Kayaker Rescued From Busse Woods: Officials

The rescue effort got underway late Saturday and spanned about two hours before the kayaker was found in a muddy marsh, authorities said.

COOK COUNTY, IL — Authorities were able to locate a kayaker who became lost and trapped in a muddy marsh at Busse Woods forest preserve Saturday night. The man went out kayaking during the afternoon, paddled through some channels and lost his bearings, eventually getting stuck in the marshy area, he told authorities after they were able to locate him late Saturday. The Daily Herald reports it took more than 40 first responders about two hours to track him down.

The search effort got underway at about 8:50 p.m. after authorities received a call regarding the stranded kayaker. Search crews were able to ping the man's cell phone and also used a thermal imaging camera on top of one of the Elk Grove Village Fire Department's tower ladder to help locate the kayaker, Elk Grove fire Lt. Todd Rischling told the newspaper.

He was not injured and was able to walk out with help from his rescuers, Rischling said.
