Palatine Library Celebrates Ukrainian Culture in May

Enjoy Folk Music Performer Ivan Shmilo and his ensemble, Ukrainian Storytimes, Cooking, and more!

Palatine Public Library District highlights and celebrates Ukrainian culture and traditions in May with various programs for everyone to enjoy, and a variety of collectibles on display. Learn more and experience a bit of this culture throughout the month.

At the Main Library, located at 700 N. North Court in Palatine:

Various Ukrainian items are exhibited in the display cases on the second floor during May, including pysankas (decorative eggs), traditional attire, historical items, religious artifacts, and more.

On Wednesday, May 9, from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m., in Ukrainian Storytime, children hear traditional Ukrainian tales and songs. They also learn how to say hello and goodbye in Ukrainian.

Renowned Performer Ivan Shmilo and his ensemble perform Folk Music of Ukraine on Saturday, May 12, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Enjoy a medley of traditional songs accompanied by the Ukrainian string instrument, the bandura, a plucked string folk instrument, are a cross between the harp and the harpsichord. Learn about Ukrainian Cooking on Wednesday, May 23, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., with Susan Maddox as she demonstrates some traditional Ukrainian recipes and provides samples. Limited to valid District adult cardholders only.

Both Branch Locations feature Ukrainian Storytime and Craft:

Children hear traditional Ukrainian tales and songs, then make a special craft and learn how to say hello and goodbye in Ukrainian. For ages 4 through 7 at the Road Road Branch, Friday, May 4 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., located at 1585 Rand Road in Palatine; and at the North Hoffman Branch, Monday, May 21 from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m., located at 3600 Lexington Drive, Hoffman Estates.
