Palatine Teen Violinist To Perform On NPR's 'From The Top'

Karisa Chiu, 17, will play as a soloist and with the Calliope Piano Trio on the nationally broadcast radio show later this month.

PALATINE, IL — A 17-year-old Palatine violinist will peform on an upcoming episode of a nationally broadcast NPR classical music radio program later this month. Karisa Chiu will play on the "From the Top" episode the week of April 24 in a performance that was recorded March 12 before a live audience at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall in Boston, according to the show. Karisa will perform as a soloist, as well as with the Calliope Piano Trio, which features cellist Nathan Mo, 18, Rolling Meadows, and pianist Andrew Guo, 18, Chicago.

Karisa, who's the daughter of Chicago Symphony Orchestra violinist Cornelius Chiu, is in the final year of a homeschool program, and she studies violin at the Music Institute of Chicago under Almita Vamos, one of the leading violinists in the world, according to her show bio. When she isn't practicing or playing the violin, Karisa enjoys painting and drawing. In 2015, she had her most memorable musical experience, performing at the Music Institute of Chicago Gala with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, including her dad.

For the "From the Top" performance, Karisa, along with host Christopher O'Riley on piano, will play selections by Johannes Brahms and Jean Sibelius with Christopher O'Riley, piano. As part of the Calliope Piano Trio, she will perform a piece by Arno Babadjanian.
