Join us at one of our 5 new campgrounds to celebrate the Forest Preserves' nearly 70,000 acres of public land on National Public Lands Day!

Each campground will have a variety of fun activities that highlight outdoor adventures, restoration, nature exploration and cultural discovery. Activities are free to attend. Please note, some activities require pre-registration. To make a dinner or camping reservation, call 1-855-YES-CAMP.

Restore the Preserves; Restore Yourself
Take the time to restore some of the picturesque land in our oldest preserve surrounding Camp Reinberg and then restore yourself with music, food, relaxation and rest.
Schedule of Events
8 am: Birding at Deer Grove West, 1935 W. Dundee Rd
Meet Alan Anderson from the Chicago Audubon Society at Deer Grove West parking lot off of Dundee for a 90-minute bird walk at the FPCC’s oldest preserves.

9 am: Deer Grove Natural Area Volunteers brush cutting and brush pile burn
Join this crew for the important work of removing invasive trees and shrubs to make a healthier and more beautiful forest preserve. Register on our volunteer website or just show up. Park at Camp Reinberg and meet at the dining hall. Please dress in long pants, good shoes and a long-sleeve shirt.
11 am: Fall Native Plant Sale supporting FPCC and Barrington Area Conservation Trust
Taylor Creek Nursery brings out native plants for sale. Ask for an order form during the event or click here to download. Additional plants will be available for purchase on site until 3 pm or until they’re sold out. During the plant sale, excerpts from the films “Chicago’s True Nature” and “Hometown Habitat” will be shown.
Noon: Lunch for Stewardship volunteers
Birthday cake for everyone (until it’s gone) celebrating the100th anniversary of the FPCC’s first land acquisition.
1 pm: Seed collecting at Deer Grove Forest Preserves, meet at Camp Reinberg
We will be collecting rare and important prairie, woodland and wetland seeds in Deer Grove Preserves. Seed collecting is a great family activity–We meander across the woods and prairies to find these precious seeds. Please dress in long pants, good shoes and a long-sleeve shirt.
1 & 2 pm: Mindfulness for Beginners with Christopher George, Continuing Education Instructor, Harper College
Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating present moment awareness by paying attention on purpose, with a sense of openness, curiosity and patience. Chris George has focused on helping people develop leadership capabilities and mindfulness throughout his career.
3 & 4 pm: Holistic Restoration with Ralph Nicksarlian, Continuing Education Yoga Instructor, Harper College
Participants can take their first step into learning the basics of restoring youthfulness by sampling different techniques. Ralph Nicksarlian draws from more than 20 years as a yoga instructor to share new approaches to a healthy body.
1:30 & 3:30 pm: Landscape Oil Painting with Carol Foster

1–5 pm: Ongoing Activities
Learn about the Forest Preserve Foundation and the Young Professional Association, enjoy the L.L. Bean Lounge and practice knot-tying, as well as nature play, coloring, do-it-yourself poetry, and origami. Visitors can also meet a River Trail Nature Center bird of prey.
6 pm: Dinner
Super Food Salmon Burger Dinner by Photo’s Hotdogs and music by Dr. Scott’s Moonshine Band.
8 pm: Campfire, s’mores and night hike
