Rolling Meadows Man Was Driving 93 MPH in Crash That Killed Suburban Teen: Authorities

Matthew Zeek of Rolling Meadows has been charged with reckless homicide. Zeek was the driver in a crash that killed Rebecca Soderman.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL - A 21-year-old Rolling Meadows man who allegedly was driving 93 mph in a 25 mph zone in a crash that killed a Barrington High School student has been charged with reckless homicide, the Daily Herald reports. Matthew Zeek was behind the wheel when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree in Barrington Hills this past March. Rebecca Soderman, a passenger in the car, was taken to a suburban hospital where she later died.

A charge of reckless homicide was filed against Zeek last week in McHenry County Circuit Court, according to online court records. Zeek is free on bail.

Zeek was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu at 9:05 p.m. on March 4 west on Plum Tree Road west of Rock Ridge Road n Barrington Hills when his car left the road and hit a tree, police said. Zeek and another passenger in the car, a 16-year-old Barrington girl, were taken to Good Shepherd Hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Soderman, a senior at Barrington High, was first taken to Good Shepherd with critical injuries and then transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. She later died at Lutheran General.

If convicted, Zeek could face up to five years in prison, the Daily Herald reports.
