Shopping Center Roof Caves In After Heavy Rains

Saturday night's collapse is keeping the 7-Eleven at that location closed until the damage can be evaluated.

PALATINE, IL —The roof of a shopping center near Quentin and Palatine roads collapsed Saturday night because of the weekend storms, the Journal Online reports.

The collapse caused a convenient store in the center to shut down until the damage can be repaired, the report added.

The Palatine Fire Department was called about the collapse at about 11:26 p.m. Saturday, July 23, the report stated. Officials believe that water that accumulated from heavy rains that night created too much weight for the roof over the eastern part of the shopping center to hold, the report added.

Employees and customers were still in 7-Eleven when the collapse happened, but no one was injured, according to the report. They were evacuated, and the center's utilities were shut off, the report added.

The village will now evaluate whether the damage to the shopping center, which also holds a vacant dry cleaners storefront, can be repaired or whether the structure will need to be demolished, the Journal reports. Until that time, 7-Eleven will stay closed, the report added.
