A Talk by Pulitzer Prize Winner and Author Carlos Harrison: Free to the Public
Harper College CE and One Book, One Harper Present: Mexican-American Soldiers in World War II and Korea on March 15

Wednesday, March 15, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Harper College Main Campus, Building D, Room 195
Free and Open to the Public – Registration Required
The Lifelong Learning Institute and Harper College’s One Book One Harper program bring you an extraordinary talk on the contributions of a small Mexican-American community to World War II and the Korean Conflict. Silvis, Illinois was the home of these Hispanic soldiers, honored in Harrison’s book, “The Ghosts of Hero Street.”
The other schoolkids called them ‘dirty Mexicans.’ Still, when war threatened the country they now called home, the men had stepped up to defend it… In all, twenty-two families who lived on that one street sent fifty-seven of their children to fight. Eight died.
Pulitzer Prize winner Carlos Harrison is a journalist, editor, and writer of more than a dozen books. He has been a television correspondent, written screenplays and two award-winning television documentaries, and has published hundreds of newspaper articles and magazine pieces. Copies of “The Ghosts of Hero Street” are available at the Harper College Library or can be purchased from all major booksellers.
