Thank you, Congressman Casten

Please join me in thanking representative Casten for supporting vital legislation that improves the lives of those living with Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are devastating the lives of countless families and communities. As someone who is caring for a grandparent with dementia, I understand the enormous burden this disease has on families because I have grown up watching and supporting my family as my grandmother, my father, and my aunts have managed my Grandfather’s care. My grandfather was diagnosed when I was in elementary school, now in college, I have witnessed first-hand the loss that accompanies this terrible disease. With more than 230,000 Illinoisans living with Alzheimer’s and 588,000 providing direct care, our country must address the vital needs of families and caregivers who face the devastating emotional, physical, and financial challenges from this disease.

Without a means to prevent, cure, or even slow the progression of Alzheimer’s, it is the responsibility of Congress to support this vulnerable group and their families through increased research funding, enhanced care, and improved support. I am grateful that Congressman Casten is taking an active stance on this issue by cosponsoring the Improving HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act (H.R. 1873). It may sound obvious, but all too often obtaining a diagnosis and a care plan is a struggle and resources are not provided. This bill is critical to improving the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s and those who love them, as it works to alleviate this problem.

The number of Illinoisans living with this disease continues to increase dramatically and the financial costs associated with caring for people with the disease have the potential to bankrupt our healthcare system. Furthermore, I can attest that the emotional costs for individuals, their families, and their caregivers are enormously high. I am truly thankful to know that Congressman Casten is bringing Alzheimer's to the forefront of the congressional agenda on behalf of families like my own and hope you are too!
