Walmart Suspect Made Fake 911 Call To Distract Police: Cops

Police say a man made up a carjacking story to distract them from catching him for driving without a license at the Walmart in Palatine.

PALATINE, IL - A man who was spotted loading electronics onto a cart and loitering near a fire door at the Walmart on Rand Road in Palatine was later arrested after police said he made a fake 911 call stating that he was the victim of a carjacking.

Police say Leonard Perry, 29 of Chicago was one of two men who were inside the Walmart just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 17 when loss prevention workers had Palatine police ask them to leave. They did, but a short time later Palatine police say they received a 911 call from a man who said his car had been stolen at gunpoint a short distance from Walmart.

That caller turned out to be Perry, according to police. He was found soon after "still in the immediate vicinity of Walmart," according to police. It was then found that Perry did not have a valid driver's license and that he made the 911 call to "divert officers away from where his vehicle was parked so he could drive away without officers noticing."
