What is Walpurgisnacht? - Walpurgisnacht stems from a spring pagan celebration in the medieval days. It was the pagan annual spring fertility ritual. It was also the time of year when the farmer's decorated their brooms and chased the demons from the fields before planting. And, it was the time when the witches held their annual congregation with much mischief, mayhem and a bonfire in the Broken mountain in Germany. The name Walpurgisnacht actually comes from Saint Walburga who was a German nun and did work in England before coming back to Germany to help the people there. She was canonized on May 1st and the people celebrated on the eve of May 1st. Put it all together and you have a great excuse to come out of the winter hideaways and celebrate the new spring weather.
