2 In Custody For Fatal Shooting Of Single Mom Of 2 In Worth: Police

Charges are pending for two Harvey men tied to Saturday's fatal shooting of a woman in Worth and may be tied to other area cimes, police say

WORTH, IL — Two suspects tied to the weekend’s fatal shooting of a woman in what is believed to be a robbery gone bad are now in custody, Worth police said. The pair were arrested Sunday and are said to be linked to several other recent armed robberies in the Chicago area and northwest Indiana.

The woman was reportedly using the ATM drive-thru at a bank Saturday afternoon in the 6800 block of west 111th Street when the suspects’ vehicle pulled up, and they tried to rob her before she was shot in the chest. The gravely injured woman drove across the street to another bank, Worth Police Chief Timothy Denton told Patch.

Officers responded to a call of a person in need of assistance, but the woman had already died. The Cook County Medical Examiner attributed the cause of death to a gunshot wound. Denton said the woman’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

“Call it murder,” the police chief said.

Multiple guns were found inside the Harvey men’s car, one of which is believed to be the weapon used in the fatal shooting. The guns are currently undergoing ballistics analysis. Charges are being reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. Various police departments in the area are also looking into other cases, as well as other cases in which the pair may be involved. Contrary to social media rumors, there were no children in the car when the mother was shot, Denton said..

Friends of the woman, whom they have identified as Jonnie Angel Klein, have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help pay her funeral costs. Klein is a single mother of two and was the main caregiver for her mother.

“She worked tirelessly to provide for her family without complaint,” organizers said. “She was a kind, caring, humble, loving family member (mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin), a friend to many, a dedicated worker, a provider for those in need, and an amazing human being all round.”
