Palos Park Women's Club Mothers Day Steps Off For Moraine Valley Last Mile Scholarships

PALOS PARK, IL—The Palos Park Woman’s Club, with over 130 members, has chosen Moraine Valley Community College as a beneficiary for its fourth annual Mother’s Day Walk on May 9. All proceeds from the event will support the women’s club’s community initiatives and Moraine Valley’s Last Mile Scholarship program.

The walk runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at Lake Katherine Nature Center, 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive, Palos Par . Participants can select one of three routes to walk: a one-mile wood-chip path around Lake Katherine, a two-mile paved path along the Cal-Sag trail, or a three-mile route combining both paths. Local vendors and exhibitors will be on site selling last-minute Mother’s Day gifts. All participants will receive a T-shirt upon registration (based on availability).

“The Palos Park Women’s Club’s Mother’s Day Walk is a meaningful way for our community to come together supporting local impact,” said Ronette McCarthy, PPWC co-president and Mother’s Day Walk co-chair. “This year, we chose to support Moraine Valley’s Last Mile program because it focuses on something so important—helping students take that final step toward graduation.”

The Last Mile Scholarship program provides funds for students close to completing their degree or certificate programs. Unlike other scholarships available at Moraine Valley, the college’s Counseling and Career Development Center and administrators determine which students need the most immediate financial support to graduate. Over the years, this scholarship program has helped hundreds of students complete their degree or certificate.

“Through the Last Mile Scholarship, we help students who are just a few credits away from finishing stay on track and cross the finish line,” said Kristy McGreal, executive director of the foundation. “Together, we’re ensuring more students complete their degrees and build stronger futures for themselves and our community. This event reflects the power of community coming together to support student success.”

“We couldn’t help but love the connection between The Last Mile and the mile loop around Lake Katherine where our walk takes place,” McCarthy said. “It felt like a natural fit, a reminder that sometimes it’s that final stretch that matters most, whether you’re finishing a walk or finishing your education.”
