PALOS PARK, IL—Ready for the long weekend ahead? So is the Palos Park Police Department. Memorial Day weekend is soon upon us, which this year falls on Monday, May 25, and many motorists will be traveling our roadways. Remember, safety first:

• Allow yourself extra time to reach your destination

• Beware of construction zones

• Keep your eyes on the road

• No texting and driving

• Never drive under the influence

Memorial Day is a busy time on our roadways as many Illinoisans travel to spend time with family and friends. Palos Park police encourages all drivers to be alert and prioritize safety behind the wheel. If you’re a designated driver, it’s important to take the role seriously and not consume alcohol or use other drugs. Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if that person has been drinking.

If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure everyone has a sober ride home.

“As we gather with friends and family this Memorial Day weekend to honor those who gave their lives supporting freedom, let’s not forget that safety on our roadways is a shared responsibility,” Palos Park Police Commissioner Dan Polk said. “Please wear your safety belt, stay focused, and never drive impaired. The decisions you make could save a life.”

Palos Park officers will be on traffic details targeting aggressive driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, cell phone usage, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

Have a safe and memorable Memorial Day weekend.
