PALOS HILLS, IL—Ruse burglars targeted an elderly homeowner in a tree-trimming ploy, reports said.
Palos Hills police took a delayed burglary report on June 30. The homeowner told police that a man wearing a ski mask came to his front door in the 10300 block of 75th Avenue. The man asked the homeowner if he wanted the trees in his backyard cut down.
The homeowner allowed the man into his house and proceeded to the backyard. While the man distracted the homeowner, his two associates entered the home through the open front door.
Police said the purported burglars stole approximately $4,300 in cash and $120,000 worth of rare silver coins from an upstairs bedroom. The trio fled in a pickup truck eastbound on 103rd Avenue. The incident is under investigation.
