PALOS HEIGHTS, IL—The League of Women Voters of the Palos Orland Area will host an information session on the upcoming Moraine Valley Community College referendum this Saturday, Oct. 24. The information session will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Palos Heights Public Library, 12501 S. 71st Ave.

Voters in 26 communities served by the community college will be asked to vote yes or no to a $115 million bond referendum that will enable the college to fund the expansion of six career-based technical programs. The proposed referendum is on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The ballot question reads:

"Shall Moraine Valley Community College District No. 524, County of Cook and State of Illinois, build, equip, renovate, and repair buildings of the District for programs including but not limited to: automation and engineering technology, fire science, emergency medical services, automotive, HVAC/refrigeration, and welding, and issue its bonds to the amount of $115,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?"

The new bond would replace the college's current debt levy that is set to expire in December 2026. Over the past five years, Moraine Valley has experienced double-digit growth in its career and technical education programs.

College representatives will explain how the referendum will have little or no property tax increase. The projected impact on annual property tax bills will be around $1.50 for a $400,000 house and 62-cents for a $300,000.

Community members will be able to ask questions and get the facts before going out to vote. Early voting is now underway at 51 locations throughout Cook County.

Communities served by Moraine Valley include:

Alsip * Bridgeview * Chicago Ridge * Forest View (part) * Justice * Oak Lawn * Palos Heights * Robbins * Willow Springs (part) * Bedford Park * Burbank * Crestwood * Hickory Hills * Merrionette Park * Orland Hills * Palos Park * Summit * Worth * Blue Island * Calumet Park * Evergreen Park * Hometown * Oak Forest (part) * Orland Park * Palos Park * Tinley Park (part)
