Cyclones have respectable run in 2021

In a more regular season this fall, the Cyclones made improvements and put in the work for a respectable run.

The Cyclones ended the year with an overall 6-7 record and 2-3 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference record. Although not where the Cyclones aimed to finish, it was an improvement over the unusual, shortened spring season they were allowed to play due to COVID-19. Moraine Valley never had any blowout losses and finished the season in the Region IV quarterfinals after facing nationally ranked South Suburban College.

“We had some close games and made progress; we just didn’t have the killer instinct. But in some games, we moved the ball around well,” said Head Coach Gerry Norris, in his first official full season leading the program. “We were a less experienced team, but I’m happy with the commitment and work rate of the players.”

Leading the scoring efforts on the team was freshman striker Adriana Moreno (Morton East), who ended the season with 15 goals and 51 shots. The leaders on the field were freshmen defensive player Aoife Finn (Stagg) and vocal midfielder Natalie Orozco (Argo). Both pushed their teammates to excel. Sophomore goalkeeper Raneen Betouni (Oak Forest) was pivotal all season, making 49 saves, and elevated her game in the playoffs. Also making an impact on the field were Alyssa Froylan (Reavis) on defense and Sarah Hughes (Evergreen Park) in the midfield. Moreno and Finn each earned All-Region IV and All-Conference honors for their efforts.

Next season, Norris is looking to add more games to the schedule along with more club players to his team. “I know we can compete, progress and finish above this year. This team was ready to train, and they wanted to be here. We want to continue to do even better,” he said.
