Fake Apple Rep Scams Palos Hills Woman Out Of $4,000 In Bitcoin

PALOS HILLS, IL — An older woman was scammed out of several thousand dollars by a text from someone she believed to an Apple representative, reports said.

Palos Hills officers responded to the 8700 block of 96th Place for a call about a deceptive practice on Jan. 6. The woman told police she received a text from Apple notifying her of suspicious activity on her account.

She was instructed to send $4,000 via Athena Bitcoin, a network of bitcoin ATMs. After she sent the monies, the texter asked for an additional $14,000, police said. It was then the woman realized it was a scam.
