Fake FBI Agent Scams Woman Into Giving Financial Information
A caller posing as an FBI agent convinced a Palos Park woman to turn over her financial information to solve a crime spree, police said.
PALOS PARK, IL — A Palos Park woman gave a caller her personal financial information after he passed himself off as an FBI agent, police said. The fake G-man called the woman Sept. 3 and told her that her "rental vehicle" was used in a string of crimes in Texas, even though she had never been to Texas or rented a car.
After engaging the caller several times, police said the woman eventually provided her bank account information, social security number and a copy of her driver’s license. The caller told the woman that her identity had been stolen and the "Maryland State Police" were involved in the case and needed additional information, which the woman provided.
Police said that the woman had immigrated to the United States from another country and spoke limited English.
"If you get an unexpected call or email from someone who claims they ... (need) information (from) you for an emergency or another family member needing money right away, beware," said Chief Joe Miller, of the Palos Park Police Department. "There's a good chance this is an imposter trying to steal your money. Just call us to check it out."
