Green Hills Public Library District Introduces: The New and Improved Children’s Play Space
Bring the Kids to Explore and Play in The All-New Play Space!
Green Hills Public Library District is proud to announce the reopening of its newly redesigned children’s play space, The Campground. Natalie Djordjevic, Head of Youth Services, led this project by planning and developing the space along with a planning committee. "When redesigning the Campground, I wanted to create a colorful and inviting space for children and their families that would serve as a playground for imagination and communal play”, said Djordjevic. The new imaginative play activities include a wooden play grill and farmer’s market stand complete with play food and accessories. More imaginative play activities include a felt board table with themed characters and scenes. Another new addition is an educational light table that includes X-ray transparencies and constellation patterns, encouraging young learners to explore science through play. To complete the Campground theme, there is a campfire with log seating, a toy fire, roasting sticks, and s’mores!
Brand-New Toy Collection Available for In-Library Check Out
In addition to the permanent play items, staff developed a brand-new in-house toy collection. Visitors can check out themed kits in the following categories: music, building, sensory, cars, and active play. Natalie Djordjevic, Head of Youth Services, adds, “I wanted to offer children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to have focused and stimulating play that fits their needs. Now, families can browse our additional toy offerings and decide what would give their child the most meaningful and fun Library experience.”

Deputy Director Sara Horn stated that the Library’s 2025-2027 Strategic Plan had a significant impact on the planning of this new space, with the goal of transforming community feedback into functional results. Horn said, “Part of our strategic planning process in 2024 involved surveying the community, which gave us helpful insights as to how we can better meet their needs. One of our strategic directions is to optimize Library spaces for access and comfort, and redesigning the play area became one of our priorities based on patron responses. We’re proud of how the space turned out, and it has been incredible to see so many families enjoying it.”
At the heart of the Library’s vision is to cultivate curiosity for all. This new play space is filled with exciting new toys and activities designed to spark children's curiosity. Part of the Green Hills Public Library District’s mission is to connect the community with experiences to inspire lifelong learning. The Campground was designed to inspire learning for our youngest patrons through interactive experiences with our new play activities and in-house toy collection. One of our main goals with this project is to get kids excited about visiting the Library while learning and playing in this comfortable, colorful space. We invite children and caregivers to come visit and enjoy the new Campground.
