Obituaries

Joseph (Joe) Nowak

Passed away peacefully on September 14th surrounded by his loving family at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL at the age of 71

Joe is survived by his three sons (Tony 44, Steve 41, Joe 39), three daughters-in-law (Annie, Colleen and Jessie), seven grandchildren (Will 12, Evie 10, Jack 9, Nate 9, Elise 8, Millie 6, and Abbie 1), as well as his brothers and sisters (Margaret, Jim, Dianne and John). He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Nowak (Murray), parents Anthony (Tony) and Joanne Nowak and siblings Virginia Zientara, Anthony (Tony Jr.) Nowak and MaryJo Lowden.

Joe was born on March 19, 1950, in Chicago -- he married Dorothy while working as a Jewel grocery stock boy in 1973.

Joe worked a variety of jobs before finding his passion as a stationary engineer for Chicago Osteopathic Hospital in the 1980’s. From there he spent his career focused on mastering both the skills and regulations within medical based facilities including St. Bernard Hospital, Kindred Health and Providence Health.

As the father of three boys, one of Joe’s greatest joys was being involved as a coach for each of his son’s respective sports teams and activities. As the unofficial czar of the “Russia House” in Midlothian, he instilled in them a blue collar work ethic, as well as a drive to succeed through hard work and education, encouraging each of them to pursue a college education.

Joe’s pride extended to his Polish heritage and spending time with the Nowak Family. His annual homemade Polish sausage preparation around the holidays is a tradition that is sure to be passed down and celebrated by future Nowaks for generations to come. He had a passion for gardening and enjoyed sharing his tried and true “methods” and “hacks” with friends and family. During retirement he took joy spending time with his seven grandchildren, watching family pets, completing 1,000 piece puzzles and serving as home improvement consultant.
