WORTH, IL—Kitten season, that notorious time of year when unspayed female cats who live outdoors go into heat and shelters are flooded with kittens, is revving up. If you’ve noticed an abundance of feral cats around your neighborhood and baby kittens crying for help, Triple R Pets is holding a hands-on Trap-Neuter-Release workshop on Saturday, March 28.

The workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Worth Public Library, 6917 W. 111th St. Participants will learn how to trap, transport and return cats to their outdoor colonies. Find out where the low-cost spay/neuter clinics are and what their services and costs are. Your legal rights to feed, water and shelter your colony in Cook County will also be reviewed.

Kitten season typically occurs from early spring through late fall, with a peak in the warmer months. During this time, unspayed female cats go into heat more frequently and have the potential to give birth to multiple litters, with an average of 4-6 kittens born per litter. That’s at least 12-18 kittens born per cat in just one year, and unfortunately many of these kittens born outside end up in shelters or die outside.

Volunteers will provide hands-on training (minus the kitty) including how to set a trap. Tips and tricks for trapping even the smartest feline will be shared. All questions are encouraged and will be answered, and there is no such thing as a dumb question.

If you intend to trap cats and let Triple R Pets help you with the financial costs, please complete the online TNR Assistance Request form before you attend a workshop. Triple R will be loaning traps at the workshop, with a limit of two traps per caretaker. Renting the traps is free, but an $80 refundable security deposit per trap (cash or check only) is required for all traps. The security deposit will be refunded upon the return of clean and unbroken traps. Traps can also be returned at the workshop.
