Meet Jane Addams In One-Woman Show At The Palos Heights Library

The LWV Palos-Orland chapter present "A Social Gathering With Jane Addams" Saturday, March 9, at the Palos Heights Public Library.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL — Residents are invited to meet the great social justice crusader Jane Addams this Saturday, March 9, at the League of Women Voters Palos-Orland Area March program.

Part of the League’s “Democracy In America” series, the program begins with coffee and snacks at 9:30 a.m. at the Palos Heights Public Library, 12501 S. 71st Ave., followed by the one-woman performance, “A Social Gathering with Jane Addams.”

Chicago actress Betsey Means of WomanLore will enter the room as Jane Addams and, staying in character throughout, she will engage the audience with her portrayal of Ms. Addams as she reviews her own historical contributions to democracy in America.

Jane Addams (1860-1935) was a crusader for social justice who devoted her life to fighting for the rights of workers, women and children. Jane Addams established Chicago's Hull House, one of the most famous settlement houses in America.

Means is a professional actress who has performed with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare on the Green, Blue Rider Theatre, and Chicago Children's Theatre, among other groups. She and partner, Eileen Vorbach, bring women of history to life in theatrical performances adapted directly from journals, autobiographies, and personal writings.
