Memorial Scholarship Honors Late Anne Fuelling At Moraine Valley

PALOS HILLS, IL — Two former Moraine Valley faculty members have set up a new memorial scholarship in honor of their longtime friend. The scholarship is being offered for the 2020-21 academic year to a student studying culinary arts at Moraine Valley Community College.

The scholarship, created by former Moraine Valley faculty members Sharon Fritz and Lenette Staudinger, will honor the memory of their longtime friend, Anne Fuelling, of Worth, who died in February at age 82.

“Anne was a retired teacher. To have a scholarship in her name really honors her teaching legacy, and that means a lot to me,” said her husband, Tom Fuelling. “I’m just overwhelmed by the generosity of these two ladies. I can’t think of a better way to honor and support education than to help someone who needs a little extra financial help.”

Fritz said she, Staudinger and Fuelling were friends for 40-plus years and spent more than three decades as members of the Palos-Orland area branch of the American Association of University Women.

“Anne was 50 years ahead of the recent healthy eating trends. Her degree and work as a dietician gave her a passion for balanced and healthy eating,” Fritz said. “Since her husband, Lenette and I all taught for 30 years together at Moraine Valley, we believed the best way to honor her memory was to give a scholarship to a student who was studying culinary arts. This would allow them to carry her ideals and passions into the future.”

Fuelling shared her passion for food with everyone, including her students in junior high school, where she taught home economics.

“Anne was an excellent cook,” Fritz said. “And she made the best lemon meringue pie I’ve ever eaten.”

The scholarship will be awarded through the Moraine Valley Foundation to a student enrolled in any of the culinary arts programs at Moraine Valley who maintains a 2.5 GPA, demonstrates financial need and completes an essay describing their educational and career goals.
