Mom Sick Of 'Moron' Drivers Passing School Bus When It’s Stopped

A Palos Heights mom post video of cars flying past the school bus when it's stopped and kids are getting off the bus

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL -- A Palos Heights mom is sick and tired of drivers breezing past the school bus when it’s stopped and children are disembarking. Laws state that vehicles need to stop when the school bus lights are flashing or the flag is up signaling to other motorists when children are climbing aboard or getting off the bus. Eren Evers took a video of cars speeding past the bus when her boys were getting off.

“The bus driver beeps at them. This is a school bus. People don’t care,” she said. “I’ve seen cars behind the bus just go past.”

Evers posted the video of cars whizzing past the yellow bus on the Moms of Palos Facebook page. The speed limit is 35 mph, but vehicles are often driving 50-mph or more. She says it’s an everyday occurrence.

“I am so tired of this, the bus driver has the stop sign open and people drive by like morons so fast, some time they even pass from the back of the bus because they don't want to wait… I know we live in a busy street but this is ridiculous. This is every day!!! Can you see that white car???? He is driving on the shoulder !!!! Sorry for the rant.”

Evers understands that she lives on a busy street but says there is no need to disobey the law by passing the school bus when it’s stopped. She says before she was able to get her phone out, a semi-truck went flying by the bus.

“They pass on the shoulder when the kids are still getting off the bus. It’s ridiculous,” Evers said. “This year it’s gotten worse.”

She plans to show the video to Palos Heights police. Evers hopes that police can set up some type of enforcement or put in some speed bumps. She likes it when College Drive is full of potholes because it slows down traffic.

“Respect the school bus and stop,” Evers said. “That’s all there is. Don’t drive on the shoulder or pass the bus because it’s illegal. Slow down. It’s not a highway. We can’t even use our front yard because the drivers are crazy.”
