Palos-Area Communities Plan Remembrance Events Friday Marking 25 Years Since 9/11

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL—So that we never forget the bravery of first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, Palos area communities are planning ceremonies and events marking the 25th anniversary of the tragic events this Friday, Sept. 11.

Palos Heights

The City of Palos Heights is hosting solemn ceremony will take place at 7:30 a.m. at city hall, 7607 W. College Parkway, as “we honor the the lives lost, the heroes who gave all, and the strength that carried us foward.”

Palos Heights officials will also be dedicating a new monument at city hall commemorating the first responders who died in the 9/11 attacks in New York.

The monument, by Czarnik Memorials Inc., features a police officer's hat and firefighter's helmet honoring the first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The new monument will be installed by another existing memorial honoring all the victims of the tragic events from 25 years ago.

Palos Park

On Friday, Sept. 11, at 9:11 a.m., the Village of Palos Park will come together for a moment of silence to honor and remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Village staff, Palos Park police and Palos Park Fire District personnel will gather outside village hall to pause, reflect and pay tribute to the victims, their families and all those whose lives were forever changed that fateful day.

Residents are invited to join village officials in this moment of silence at Palos Park Village Hall, 8999 W. 123rd St., or on their own at 9:11 a.m.

“I've been to Ground Zero and visited the 9/11 Memorial, and it's an experience that stays with you,” Mayor Nicole Milovich-Walters said. “There's something about standing in that place that makes everything feel incredibly raw and real. Even though you weren't there on that day, you can feel the weight of what happened and the tremendous loss so many families experienced. Twenty five years later, it's important that we continue to stop, remember those who were lost, honor the first responders who ran toward danger, and make sure we never forget.”

Worth

Worth School Dist. 127 schools will also be holding Patriot Day ceremonies in remembrance of the tragic events 25 years ago. Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms, as are guests to wear red, white and blue, Friday, Sept. 11:

• Worth Junior High School, 11151 S. New England Ave. , 8:20 to 8:40 a.m.
• Worth Elementary School, 11218 S. Ridgeland Ave., 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.
• Worthwoods School, 11218 S. Ridgeland Ave., 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Mars-Meyer American Legion Post 991

The color guard from Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post 991 and the Burbank Detachment of the Marine Corps League will gather for their annual Patriot Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park Flame at 11th Street and Harlem Avenue.

The ceremony will start at 7:46 a.m. CT, which is when the first plane hit the World Trade Center and will stay until 9:03 a.m. CT, the time United Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.
