Moraine Valley Increases In-Person Offerings For Spring Semester

PALOS HILLS, IL — Starting this spring, Moraine Valley Community College will nearly double the number classes that have some in-person learning. The college has been hosting a majority of classes online since March, when most of Illinois shut down due to the pandemic.

Classes will be taught in online, virtual and hybrid formats. Online classes will have no online meeting times. Virtual classes will be conducted synchronously with set days and times for real-time online learning. Hybrid classes are taught with a combination of online and face-to-face instruction.

The spring semester schedule will be viewable on the college’s website beginning Oct. 5.

Moraine Valley ran a limited number of hybrid classes in the fall semester for career and technical education courses and laboratory classes that required hands-on learning. For the spring, more than 500 hybrid classes will be available across all subject matters.

“We’ve heard from many of our students that they feel they would be more successful in their coursework with an in-person component,” said Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, college president. “The college has been conservative and methodical in reopening our campus to employees, students and the community, and we’re confident that we can safely return more students to campus this spring while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and proper social distancing in classrooms.”

The college requires anyone coming to campus to complete a health assessment using the Campus Clear self-screening app before arriving. The app will inform a user whether they are permitted to be on campus based on any COVID-19 symptoms they may be experiencing. Masks are required in all college buildings and outdoors when a six-foot distance cannot be maintained.

Moraine Valley has developed a series of protocols in keeping with best practices from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Illinois Department of Public Health in the event that on-campus students and employees are symptomatic or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.
