PALOS HILLS, IL — If you want to get away for a few weeks this summer, Moraine Valley Community College students and community members can earn college credit and study in Athens, Greece. The college is offering a short study abroad program for two weeks in the summer pre-season starting this May.

The three-week class is Social Science 101 (SSC-101-610), which covers history, economics, sociology and politics but will incorporate a study abroad element for the first time. The course will begin on May 22 at Moraine Valley before students and the instructor head to Athens toward the end of the first week – May 25 to June 10.

Participants will be hosted by the American College of Greece, and will hear several lectures and learn about ancient and modern Greece, in addition to taking excursions and enjoying some free time to explore.

Merri Fefles, assistant professor of history and political science who is teaching this course, said the program offers flexibility for students who still want to take eight-week classes in the summer.

“Study abroad is one of those things that cannot be quantified. It changes your life; it expands your knowledge, beliefs and understanding of yourself,” Fefles said. “The program will be a blend of lecture and hands-on learning. So, there will be a lecture on the Parthenon and then a visit to the Parthenon in the afternoon.”

In addition to tuition and fees, the travel portion will cost an estimated $3,200, which includes airfare, transportation, lodging, some meals, academic lectures, four excursions, a service-learning experience and travel insurance. Students using financial aid may be eligible for some funding.
