The hardworking Moraine Valley Community College women’s soccer team is ready to set off on another season with a mix of returners and newcomers.

Gerry Norris took over the program as head coach in spring 2021. In a rebuilding year that fall, the Cyclones went 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. They progressed all season and hope to take even bigger strides this fall.

“I want us to play well, as best we can, and win this season,” Norris said.

Back this year is sophomore Aoife Finn (Stagg), a strong defender who earned 2021 All-Region IV and All-Conference honors and was a vocal leader throughout her first season. Third-year player Sarah Hughes (Evergreen Park) also returns with her strong midfield skills.

Among the newcomers, Dyani Calderon (Kennedy) and Diana Hernandez (Acero- Major Hector P. Garcia M.D.) have good control of the ball and should help score some goals.

“The players have been working hard the last few weeks. I hope we win games and compete with the stronger teams to make the playoffs,” Norris said.

The Cyclones open their season at home on Aug. 27, 2:30 p.m., against Kankakee Community College.
