Moraine Valley women’s soccer team played friendly scrimmage with Unified Soccer Teams

The Moraine Valley women's soccer team spent time interacting with students at Percy Julian Middle School in Oak Park on Sept. 21.

Big grins and delighted squeals abounded at Percy Julian Middle School in Oak Park on Sept. 21 all thanks to the Cyclone women’s soccer team. The athletes played a friendly scrimmage with Oak Park District 97 Unified Soccer Teams, which includes students with and without disabilities.

About 23 kids in fourth to eighth grade participated in the outdoor game. Running back and forth along the turf, both groups happily kicked around the soccer ball. This is the second year that the groups have worked together. Last year, Moraine Valley hosted the game in their gym on campus due to rainy weather.

“We've developed a good relationship with the program. Former assistant coach and my good friend, James Kline, is involved with that program so we plan on doing something with them each year,” said head Coach Al Palar. “I love doing this because it's so great for both sides. The kids are always so happy to see the athletes, and they have a ton of fun playing with us. But I think the team and I have more fun playing with them.”

Following the game, all the athletes were treated to pizza. The Cyclones even started dancing and singing their favorite songs with the kids.

“It’s really inspiring seeing all the kids and how much passion they have for the game and how fun it is for them. It kind of inspires me to make it fun like they do,” said freshman Brooke Janeczek (Lockport Township). “It’s a great opportunity to come here and do something that means something to the community instead of just Moraine Valley.”

“When I was out there, I saw the little kids happy and it made me happy to see them enjoying their time. I just want them to have a good time playing and learning,” said freshman Bedour Elbeitoni (Stagg). “Being on the Moraine Valley team and coming here is a good experience overall.”

From players to coaches, everyone enjoyed the day and they plan to continue this collaboration.

“They all have such great personalities and really brighten our day just being around them. When I watch my athletes playing and just hanging out with the kids, it's really nice to see the smiles from both ends,” Palar said. “We had fun. Experiences like this always put things in perspective. I'm glad we had the opportunity with the kids and look forward to seeing them again soon.”
