Nearly 50 Families Attend Family Math Night at Oak Ridge School

Event a Success

Parents and their fourth-grade students showed up and they showed why North Palos School District 117, in general, and Oak Ridge School, in particular, are among the highest-performing districts and schools, respectively, in the area.

Parents and their students braved a cold, steady rain Thursday night to attend Family Math Night that featured Oak Ridge math teachers sharing with adults the same strategies they teach their students in class.

In three different break-out sessions, teachers discussed fractions, problem-solving and multiplication and division. These fourth graders were smart as whips as they anticipated answers and called them out as quickly as the teachers could write them on the board.

“Who can give me a fraction greater than one?” asked teacher Gloria Scislowicz. Before she could even start writing the responses on the board, students were calling out correct answers in rapid fire.

Lucas Szkoda’s hand was up nearly the entire time as he tossed out correct answers in succession. The Palos Hills’ boy was there with his mom Anna.

Bridgeview residents Ken Godinez and daughter Arabella, who correctly answered her share of questions, attended the event.

Mr. Godinez said he wouldn't have missed the chance to attend the event with his daughter.

"It’s really important to support your children, especially in school,” he said. “As her parents, we want to do everything we can to make sure she has a good life,” he said.

“You always want your kids to have a better life than you have. And this is a great event!"
