New Micropantry at Green Hills Public Library District

"Take what you need, leave what you can."

The Green Hills Public Library District is proud to introduce a new resource to our community: a micropantry! Our micropantry is located just outside the Library's entrance. We invite our community members to "take what you need, leave what you can."

What is a Micropantry?

A micropantry is a free food and item pantry designed to serve those in need by providing access to non-perishable food items, household cleaning items, baby products, and personal care products. The micropantry is accessible 24/7, ensuring that individuals and families can access items at their convenience. The concept is simple yet powerful: neighbors help neighbors by taking what they need and leaving what they can.

When asked how the idea of a micropantry came about, Library Director Jane Jenkins explained, “I was inspired to introduce a micropantry at Green Hills Public Library District because I wanted to be part of a movement that empowers communities to support one another. Micropantries started as small, accessible food resources placed in public spaces, and we’re proud to offer one here at Green Hills.”

The Library has already seen a positive community response since installing the micropantry in early October. Director Jenkins remarked on the initial impact, stating “The community has been incredibly generous in their donations, and we’re seeing a quick turnover in items.” Director Jenkins also stated that if someone wants to contribute but isn’t sure what to donate, the Library will accept monetary contributions for staff to purchase in-demand items.

How You Can Help

The micropantry relies heavily on community contributions. We invite our community to donate shelf-stable, non-perishable food, and personal care items. Some examples of needed items include:

  • Canned Goods: Fruits, vegetables, soups, meats, and beans.
  • Dry Goods: Rice, pasta, cereal, baking mixes, and crackers.
  • Other Essentials: Peanut butter, jelly, juice, condiments, spices, and cooking oils.
  • Personal Care Items (high demand): Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, soap, and menstrual products.
  • Baby Items: Baby food, diapers, and wipes.

The Library also welcomes monetary donations to help replenish the pantry when supplies run low. Those interested can contact Roberta Richter, Head of Business Services, at rrichter@greenhillslibrary.org or call 708-598-8446 ext. 119 for more information.

Important Guidelines

To ensure the micropantry is most effective and safe for all users, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Items Needed: Only unopened, unexpired non-perishable food items and personal care products are accepted.
  • Weather Considerations: During colder months, be mindful that canned goods and bottled items may freeze when temperatures drop below 35 degrees.
  • No Overflow: If the micropantry is full, please refrain from leaving additional items outside. Instead, bring donations to the Patron Services Desk on the Library’s second floor to avoid attracting pests.

Items We Cannot Accept

To maintain hygiene and safety, certain items cannot be accepted, including:

  • Perishable foods (milk, eggs, bread, produce)
  • Expired items
  • Homemade goods
  • Sharp items (razors)
  • Clothing
  • Medicine
