Palos-Area Cooling Centers Open, 110 Heat Index Possible

PALOS, IL — UPDATED: A heat wave returns to the south suburbs with peak heat index values of 110 degrees expected for Monday. Residents are reminded that cooling centers are available in the Palos area if needed.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning (changed from a heat watch Sunday) in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 for the area. Temperatures will start to increase on Saturday, which will have a high of 90. There is a chance of storms on Saturday night into Sunday, according to the weather service.

Sunday will have a high of 90 with peak heat index values of 95; Monday will have a high of 96 with peak values of 110; and Tuesday will have a high of 94 with peak heat index values of 105.
The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Expect afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s and low 80s in the evening.

Check on elderly and disabled family and friends and neighbors. Have plenty of water on hand for your pets and keep them inside or in a shaded shelter. Call 911 if you think someone needs a well-being check and you can’t get there yourself, or if you see someone struggling on the street.
