PALOS HEIGHTS, IL — Got a Hyundai? The Palos Heights Police Department is giving out a limited number of free steering wheel lock devices to Palos Heights residents thanks to a donation from Hyundai to help thwart car thieves.

The rise in Hyundai vehicle thefts, inspired by a TikTok video showing how to start these cars without a key, Palos Heights police contacted Ira Gabriel, Hyundai Senior Group Manager for Corporate Marketing. Gabriel collaborated on a solution to help prevent Hyundai vehicle thefts in Palos Heights.

In 2022, over 7,000 Hyundais and Kias were stolen in the Chicago area alone. Some insurance companies have stopped insuring Hyundai and Kias.

The Hyundai 2015-2021 models use a plain metal key to start the vehicle. Vehicles that rely on a coded key fob and push-button starter are not affected. Hyundai vehicles that rely on a coded key fob and push-button starter are not impacted.

Gabriel related that very soon, Hyundai will have a software update available to stop these vehicle thefts. Until then, Hyundai offered Palos Heights police a limited amount of the no cost, anti-theft steering wheel locks which may help avert these thefts until a permanent anti-theft solution is accessible by Hyundai.
