- Purchase costumes that are made of flame retardant material.
- Try to work reflector strips into your child's costume, or equip your children with a flashlight or light stick to make them more visible at night.
- Make sure that your child’s costume fits properly to avoid any accidents like tripping over a long dress or cape. Nothing ruins Halloween like a trip to the emergency room or dentist. Make sure costume is comfortable since it will probably be worn for several hours.
- If your child is carrying a prop such as a scythe or sword, make sure the prop is made out of a flexible plastic that will bend if fallen upon.
- Pre-test any makeup you plan to use by applying a small amount on the arm of the person who will be wearing it for about thirty minutes, a few days in advance. If a rash, redness, swelling, or any other signs of irritation develop where the makeup was applied, it could be a sign of a possible allergy or adverse reaction.
- Make sure you accompany your children while trick or treating, or designate a trusted adult that will accompany them.
- If your children are older and will be trick or treating without adult supervision, instruct them to take friends with them. Make certain you know the route they will be taking and that they know not to deviate from that route.
- Let your children know that they are to check in with you by phone or by stopping back at home.
- Help your child pick out a costume that will be safe. If they are wearing a mask of any kind, make certain that they eye holes are large enough that their visibility is not limited.
- Consider organizing or attending parties at home as an alternative to trick or treating.
