'Pro-Newman Crowd' Reacts To 3rd Congressional Debate
Attendees of Wednesday night's 3rd Congressional District candidate forum give their take on Marie Newman and Dan Lipinski.

PALOS HILLS, IL -- Reactions from Wednesday night's Illinois 3rd Congressional District Democratic debate were mixed, but most who talked to Patch after the League of Women Voters of the La Grange-Area event at Moraine Valley Community College thought that challenger Marie Newman was the winner. Newman and incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski touched on prepared questions on transportation, civil rights, job creation and other issues facing the United States of America during a forum that drew hundreds.
A diverse group, including those of all ages, attended. Some, like a trio of students from Argo High School in Summit, were there as part of a class assignment.
"We either had to go to a board meeting or this, and this seemed to be more interesting," one of them said, indicating that while she had favored Lipinski before the debate she is a Newman supporter now.

.@Marie4Congress says it is "fascinating" that Lipinski opposes gerrymandering since he "sat down with Mike Madigan" to cut out parts of an existing district. #IL03

"It seemed like everyone (in the crowd) was going against Lipinski," the student said. "Definitely a pro-Newman crowd."

A group of women nearby agreed. One liked the event, but "wished it covered healthcare a bit more."
Her friend said that she "knew we needed some change" when Lipinski voted against Obamacare, while a third woman in the group said she was "impressed with Marie Newman's warmth."
"She knows her subjects, but also has a way of making you feel comfortable."
"Having a Tea Party of the Left" that makes promises that can't happen is not going to work. - @RepLipinski during #IL03 debate.

A man who said he was a leader with a state Right to Life group said he's been a fan of Lipinski for years and thought he did well during the debate.
On how they would stay in touch with constituents: Newman says this is her 134th town hall since campaign started. Lipinski says he's one of the few Congressmen who still holds town halls. #IL03
