Savion Glover STePz into a family performance today

Last night we saw the most energizing show at the Harris Theater. Tap master Savion Glover brought together “hoofers” from across the country to create STePz. The good news is there is one more performance today as part of the Harris Theater Family Series.

We all know the weather is going to be lousy for the next few days. You want to get out of the house today because you all have cabin fever. The Harris Theater Family Series show today is a great way to cure your cabin fever. You know Savion Glover from Broadway shows, including The Tap Dance Kid, as well as films such as Happy Feet 1 and 2. Your kids know him from music class. As we drove down to see the show last night, our girls told us they watched some videos of his dancing in music.

This production, STePz, had its world premiere at the Joyce Theater over the summer of 2013. STePz fuses the past with the present, incorporating a music selection that ranges from the classical virtuosity of Shostakovich to the iconic pop songs of Prince. The performers include  Marshall Davis, Jr. and the members of 3CW (3 Controversial Women): Ayodele Casel, Robyn Watson and Sarah Savelli. Watching them onstage is awe-inspiring.

They work so hard, yet never seem tired. At one point Savion was chanting during a dance. This was about half-way through the second act. I couldn’t believe he could sing and dance at that pace. The subtly in their performances kept the audience cheering. At one point all five performers are on the stage. You hear tapping, but can’t figure out whose feet are moving. The entire audience was leaning forward staring at the tap shoes. Eventually you realize who is moving, but you never see the shoes move. It’s mezmerizing.

Tickets start at just $10. You can purchase tickets by phone at 312.334.7777 or in person at the Harris Theater Box Office at 205 E. Randolph Drive in Chicago. Be sure to bring the entire family to this show.  Watching STePz is a show all generations will enjoy.
