Shepard's New Coach Aims to Build New Foundation

Coach: Kelsey Clifford (first season).

Last year’s record: 11-8 in the South Suburban Red.

Opener: March 18 vs. Chicago Christian.

Quick hit: “Our season will be a successful one if our team demonstrates respect for the game, the rules, the players and their efforts,” Shepard coach Kelsey Clifford said. “The understanding and demonstration of respect leads to self-discipline, which leads to success.”

Infield: Brittany Blanton, senior, first base.  Emily Ramel, senior, at third base.

Outfield: Brittany Wright, senior outfield. Clifford said many others are working hard in a bid to win starting positions.

Pitching staff: Devon Neubauer returns for her fourth season as a starter for the Astros. Freshman Stephanie Brand will work behind Neubauer as Shepard prepares for a changing of the guard.

Catcher: Crista Dusek, a four-year regular, and Alexandria Alarcon, a senior from Alsip, will battle for the starting job.

Coach Kelsey Clifford says: “I picture us to be the type of team that plays hard to the last pitch of the game.  We are quick to change strategies for whatever type of ballgame comes our way.”

College recruits: Emily Ramel (St.Ambrose), Crista Dusek (Indiana State).
