St. Alexander Students Rock Bald Heads for St. Baldrick's Foundation

St. Alexander students raise $6,000 for childhood cancer research during head shaving assembly.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL -- St. Alexander School in Palos Heights went bald for a cause during a St. Baldrick’s assembly on March 15, where students braved a shave to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Students raised over $6,000 in pledges by committing to shave off their hair for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment. Approximately 20 St. Al’s students shaved their heads in a show of support for children undergoing cancer treatment..

Fourth-grader Mary Sheerin led the pack with over $1,300 in pledges. Mary, whose teenage cousin was affected by cancer last year, donated the first ten inches of her hair to Locks for Love, a charity makes wigs for children with cancer.

“Mary is really excited to do something to help raise money for kids with cancer,” her mom, Stacy Sheerin said. “When her cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumor, we all felt helpless. It was Mary’s idea to help that really got this ball rolling.”

Melissa and Lauren, two licensed hairdressers from Salon L in Palos Heights, volunteered to do the shaving honors. This was the first time St. Alexander’s participated in a Baldrick’s shaving event.
