PALOS PARK, IL — Palos Park resident Ethan Phillips, a senior at Stagg High School, was recently awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship, a full four-year housing and tuition scholarship for golf caddies, and the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship program.

Phillips earned the scholarship by meeting its four selection criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character. The full tuition and housing college scholarship is valued at an estimated $125,000 over four years.

The Stagg senior is one of 104 students in the Chicago area to receive the prestigious Evans Scholarship this year. Phillips caddied at Edgewood Valley County Club in Burr Ridge. Edgewood Valley Country Club. He’s considering University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he plans to study mechanical engineering. Evans Scholars will receive their official university placements by mid-March.

An estimated 380 caddies will be awarded the Evans Scholarship this year. Currently, a record 1,260 are enrolled at 27 universities nationwide as Evans Scholars, and more than 12,575 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded in 1930.
