Tiffani Carlsen Spells Success
Independence Junior High Student, Tiffani Carlsen, shines at the 39th Annual Lenon Wisdom Memorial Spelling Bee.

On Friday, April 15, 2016, the 39th Annual Lenon Wisdom Memorial Spelling Bee Contest took place where State Senator, Bill Cunningham and State Representatives, Kelly Burke and Fran Hurley were judges. Independence Junior High School student, Tiffani Carlsen emerged from a field of twenty-six students as the second place winner. Ms. Carlsen, a sixth grader at Independence, is a member of school’s spelling team and has participated in four spelling competitions.
For Tiffiani, being a member of the Independence Spelling team helps her—because not only does it give her the knowledge of how to spell words—it also gives her the knowledge of knowing the meaning of words. Some of the words that Tiffani remembers spelling at the contest were vengeance, barrette, enormous, demeanor, and amazement. The word that she misspelled was “vengeance.”
When asked how she confronts any nerves before a spelling bee, Tiffani disclosed, “I was nervous at the beginning of the bee, but I calmed myself. To calm down, I would wait until it was almost my turn to go up and kept telling myself to concentrate. “ It appears that her concentrating and studying has paid off.
