Tinley Man Shot In Dispute Over Backpack In Palos Hills: Police

Charges are pending against a Palos Hills man accused of shooting a Tinley Park man in dispute over a backpack.

PALOS HILLS, IL — A 25-year-old man was shot during a dispute over a backpack late Saturday evening in Palos Hills, police said. Charges are pending against a Palos Hills man.

Just before midnight on Aug. 22, police were called to the area of Stratford Lane and 90th Avenue for a report of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived, the 25-year-old Tinley Park man had already been taken to Palos Community Hospital.

According to police, the Tinley Park man and a friend went to the residence to hang out after work. A cousin of the person who lived there got into a fight with the two men. The guests were asked to leave, but they refused to leave without their backpack containing $200.

Police said another man, later identified as Mark Kinastowski, 58, came to the house and removed the Tinley Park man and his pal. Family members were called to help get the men’s backpack back. They knocked on the door and were ordered to leave by Kinastowski, officers said. When they refused, police said Kinastowski pulled out a pistol and fired at the Tinley Park man, hitting him in the stomach.

Kinastowski was gone by the time officers arrived. After an extensive search, Kinastowski was taken into police custody on Aug. 25, according to the police news release.

The Tinley Park man is expected to make a complete recovery, police said.
